Smith of Mount Vernon wrote weekly columns on the editorial pages of the Morning Sentinel and Kennebec Journal, and in 2014 Islandport Press published his column book on Maine, Outdoor Life. Smith, who died earlier this year at the age of 72, won first place as the best columnist in US public opinion for his Maine Stream publications. Meanwhile, the sports staff of the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel was awarded 1st place for the best sports section among the dailies. Newspapers also had first place for former news reporter Greg Lewinsky and posthumously first place for opinion columnist George Smith.īonifant, winning first place as a sports columnist, was recognized for the highest honors among state dailies for his contributions to the Sidelines columns appearing in the sports sections of the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel.
